Orville and Gloria Franzen 2011-2012 Organ Series: Jonathan Ryan

This is the first concert of the Orville and Gloria Franzen 2011-2012 Organ Program Series, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Borg Petersen Memorial Organ in Samuelson Chapel. The concert also celebrates 41 years of service by former University Organist Carl Bertram Swanson.

Jonathan Ryan won First Prize in the 2009 Jordan II International Organ Competition and Le Tourneau Prize for the best performance of a newly commissioned work for organ and percussion ensemble. He has received First Prize in major national organ competitions including the 2006 Arthur Poister National Organ Competition, the 2006 John Rodland Scholarship Competition, the 2004 Albert Schweitzer National Organ Competition (Young Professional Division), and the 2003 Augustana Arts-Reuter National Organ Competition. He also won the Audience Prize in the 2004 Miami International Organ Competition.

Ryan studied organ and church music with Todd Wilson at the Cleveland Institute of Music and received a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music as a student of David Higgs. He holds the Fellow certificate from the American Guild of Organists, the guild’s highest professional certification.
