Coming: 'Art 91301'

The city aims to create a "cultural blueprint" for Agoura Hills through a new initiative.

A cultural renaissance is coming to Agoura Hills thanks to a new initiative helmed by Mayor William Koehler.

When Koehler took over from outgoing Mayor Denis Weber in December 2009, one of his stated goals, budget allowing, was to create an arts and culture program.

"It was felt that we wanted to create a council within the city to encourage the arts and mine the talent within the community," said Koehler.

In June, the approved 2010-11 budget included $25,000 earmarked for a unique division of cultural arts and programming desired by local residents. The Agoura Hills Department of Community Services worked with consultant Creative Hub to formulate the Cultural Arts Initiative.

"We are at the feasibility stage, evaluating what direction we want the council to take," said Koehler. "Once we have set a plan, we want to have a open forum to get input from the community on what they want to see in the community."

Any arts programming or learning opportunities have previously been under the umbrella of Community Services, and promoted through Parks and Recreation, said Amy Brink, director of community services for the city.

"We will start with artists [and their suggestions], people already involved in a cultural environment, then we will take that to residents," said Brink. "We don't know yet the form that will take—if that will be a workshop, survey, etc."

The Cultural Arts Initiative aims to help brand an "Art 91301" identity for the city of Agoura Hills, according to the media advisory released Tuesday.

Koehler will unveil the city's new Cultural Arts Initiative at Wednesday's council meeting. The announcement will describe the initiative and invite community participation.
