Relay for Life Raises Funds for Cancer

The event attracted a large crowd of volunteers and participants in Agoura Hills this past weekend.

Around 400 volunteers came out to support more than 1,000 people at "Relay for Life" in Agoura Hills this weekend in an effort to raise more than a $100,000 to help find a cure for cancer.

There were a total of 36 teams at the event, all with at least one walker on the track at all times. Each relay team had upwards of 10 members, with each once committed to raising at least $100.

"We're trying to model what cancer patients go through," said Pam Brady of the American Cancer Society. "Sometimes they don't want to take another step."

The oval track was lined with lighted candles in paper bags, each one dedicated to a cancer patient or survivor. Cancer survivors were easily identified by the purple shirts that they wore and were given gifts by the various teams participating in the relay. A lounge was made available inside one of the school buildings for survivors of cancer, and breakfast and lunch were provided.

Devin Arguello participated in the relay in support of her brother, Keegan Doheney, who was diagnosed at a young age with leukemia. Doheney had a cord-blood transplant, which involved taking bone marrow from the umbilical cord of his youngest brother.
