A young, uncollared mountain lion was fatally struck by a car on Kanan Road, just south of the Ventura (101) Freeway, on Monday, the National Park Service confirmed Thursday.

The kitten was estimated to be about 4 months old, and the lack of a tracking collar suggested that an uncollared female was roaming the Santa Monica Mountains, according to the Park Service.

The body of the mountain lion was turned over to a biologist with the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and taken to UCLA for DNA testing, which may yield answer questions about its mother and father, according to the NPS.

In October, a mountain lion was killed on the 101 Freeway near Liberty Canyon.

In 2007, a mountain lion known as P-9 was fatally struck on Las Virgenes Road, NPS officials noted, adding that collisions with vehicles are the second most common cause of mountain lion deaths in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Slow down people. I see too many people going 70+ on Kanan and Las Virgenes. Most don't know how to maneuver on mountain roads.

Please slow down. I live in Malibu and so many commuters are driving way too fast. Another deer struck on PCH yesterday. Pleeeeease slow down.

Poor thing....I love mountain lions....Slowing down will save their lives (critters) and yours.

Speed limits are too high, enforcement too low. This needs to stop. We also need to save the Chesebro Meadow as an alternate wildlife corridor.

And stop using rodenticides. They are killing our wildlife.
