If You Haven't Already, Time to Find the Sunscreen

Look for a warming trend starting today, lasting almost a week.

A warming trend will begin in the Southland today, bringing downtown L.A. an early blast of summer with a high of 88 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday before current temperature levels return on Thursday, National Weather Service forecasters said.

The NWS attributed the hot spell, coming on top of what already were unseasonably warm temperatures, to an upper level ridge of high pressure combining with a weak offshore flow.

The National Weather Service is forecasting highs today of 66 in Newport Beach; 69 in Avalon and at LAX; 72 in Long Beach; 73 in Lancaster; 74 in Anaheim, San Gabriel, Palmdale and downtown L.A.; 75 in Burbank; 77 in Pasadena and Woodland Hills; and 78 in Saugus.

Saturday will be several degrees warmer -- 11 degrees warmer, for instance, in Burbank and downtown L.A., where the high will be 83.

The downtown high will climb another three degrees on Sunday, reaching a summer-like high of 88 before a cooling trend sets in on Monday. By Thursday, the downtown high will be back at today's level.
