Five Things to Know Today, Dec. 2

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Friday and the beginning of the weekend. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: It'll be sunny with a high of 65 degrees today, and the low tonight will be around 35. Sun and 61 degrees is in the forecast for Saturday -- perfect weather for the .

Gas prices: A gallon of regular in Lilburn costs between $3.05 (at Kroger, 3050 Five Forks Trickum Road near Oak Road) and $3.19 (at Texaco, 4785 Lawrenceville Hwy at Indian Trail Lilburn Road), according to reports to www.georgiagasprices.com in the past 24 hours. In Georgia, the average is $3.177 and in the U.S., it's $3.292, according to AAA.

Hominids. One of the great discoveries of early possible ancestors of humans was the excavation of a complete skull cap of what came to be called Peking Man. A Chinese team uncovered the fossil on Dec. 2, 1929, at a large dig in China that has since been declared a Unesco World Heritage site. The skull was one of a series of fossils that together are attributed to a subspecies of Homo erectus, a hominid from more than 1 million years ago that may have been one of our early ancestors.

Remember them? On this day in 2001, Texas energy giant Enron filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after months of a falling stock price and credit downratings. While the price fell, chairman and CEO Kenneth Lay quietly sold large chunks of his stock but encouraged employees to buy more. The demise of Enron cost thousands of jobs and wiped out its employees' retirement savings. Lay and Jeffrey Skilling, who followed him as CEO, were tried and sentenced on multiple counts of corporate fraud for faking the company's financial strength. Skilling went to prison; Lay died of a heart attack.

Think ahead. Not to get too far ahead here, but holiday feasting is almost upon us, to be followed for many of us by January regret over the added pounds. You can preregister now to do something about that with a six-week fitness and nutrition class offered by the Gwinnett County Extension. It starts January 26 and costs just $13 _ compare that to any commercial course or gym membership! It'll be held just down the road in Snellville at the Centerville Community Center.
