Types of Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are used when a tooth has been damaged by tooth decay. After the decayed tissue is removed, the dental filling is placed to restore the size, shape, strength and appearance of your tooth. If our dentist in Agoura Hills determines that you are a candidate for dental fillings, you may be curious about your options.

Traditionally, damaged or decayed teeth were restored with amalgam. Amalgam fillings are still commonly used, but because amalgam fillings contain mercury, increasing numbers of patients are concerned about the potential health aspects. Today, we have another option: composite resin.

Composite resin fillings are made of a special blend of quartz and resins and are designed to match the natural structure of the tooth, which means that they are generally a more aesthetic restoration. We can place a composite resin filling in a single dental appointment, and while the process can take a little longer than the process for amalgam fillings, the filling is completely cured and ready to use by the time you leave our office.

Unlike amalgam fillings, composite resin fillings contain no potentially hazardous ingredients, and they can strengthen your tooth after the damage of a cavity. Contact our office today to learn more about available restoration methods or to schedule your appointment with our expert in dental fillings in Agoura Hills.
