The Environmental Responsibility Subcommittee meets periodically to discuss how to better our environment.
Every few months, the Environmental Responsibility Subcommittee, lead by council members Illece Buckley Weber and Harry Schwarz, meets to review important issues impacting our environment. The most recent took place May 9. "Right now we have 10 different subcommittees that meet," said Buckley Weber. Environmental issues have always been a priority for Buckley Weber who hopes to to push many environment-related issues to the forefront. "These meetings are basically informational. Our staff reports their findings on key issues and we decide from there if the next step is to take them before the full council," she said. Though no public testimony is taken during the subcommittee meetings, Buckley Weber says that the community is more than …

A bill signed by Gov. Jerry Brown will give pet owners and supporters another year to gather the requisite number of orders for the "California Pet Lover's License Plate."
Californians have another year to order the "California Pet Lover's License Plate," which will help fund spay and neuter program, thanks to a bill by Assemblyman Jose Solorio, D-Anaheim, that Gov. Jerry Brown signed last week. "It's a great idea," said Brown, who was accompanied by the state's first dog, Sutter, and actor Pierce Brosnan on his visit to a West Los Angeles pet store Wednesday. "It's not government, it's not bureaucracy. It's not Sacramento." The plates will not be distributed until 7,500 are ordered. There were 4,620 plates ordered as of Tuesday, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles. The plates cost $50 initially and have a $40 annual renewal fee. A personalized plate costs $98, with a $78 annual renewal fee. …

Senate Bill 1472 will provide local governments with the tools to fight neighborhood blight caused by foreclosed properties.
The California State Senate unanimously approved Senate Bill 1472, authored by Sen. Fran Pavley (D-Agoura Hills) on Thursday. SB 1472 is a bill that will provide local governments additional tools to fight blight caused by foreclosed properties primarily owned by banks and financial institutions. “Bank and financial institution’s foreclosed homes can create a nuisance for neighboring residents,." said Pavley. "Properties not being cared for lowers the value of surrounding homes, and abandoned properties attract gangs, drug users, and squatters. Untended properties also create mosquito abatement problems and increased fire risks.” SB 1472 extends the use of enforcement tools for local agencies to combat blight, including fines of up to $1,…

The California Department of Finance released estimated population numbers Wednesday.
The Department of Finance released population estimate numbers for January 2012 Wednesday as well as state rankings for the 482 cities within California. Each city was ranked by population size and of the 482 cities, 412 saw gains while 68 had a decrease in population. Agoura Hills only saw an increase in its population base by 42 residents or a .2 percent increase since January 2011. Agoura comes in as the 292nd largest city in California. So does a small growth in population impact the city in any way? "It's pretty normal for populations to fluctuate, and our numbers are low anyway compared to the rest of the region," Assistant City Manager Nathan Hamburger told the Agoura Hills Patch following the release of the 2010 census. The Agoura …

L.A. County Health officials launch crackdown on fish mislabeling violations.
Sparked by findings that more than half of all fish is wrongly labeled at restaurants and markets in Los Angeles County, a swift crackdown has been launched to ensure consumers are protected and get what they are paying for. Moving quickly to address the public's alarm about the false labeling, County Supervisors Tuesday voted to direct the Department of Public Health to work with federal and state agencies to address the issue of seafood mislabeling in Los Angeles County. “Consumers must have confidence that the fish they are buying at restaurants and grocery stores is safe and labeled correctly,” said Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich in a statement. The Board of Supervisors approved studying the possible use of the Food and Drug …

Just a note to clarify. Members of the public can and do speak at open and public meetings. Under the Brown Act, the limitations are defined by whether it is a “regular” or “special” meeting. At “regular” meetings (i.e., City Council), there is a section to receive public comment for items not listed on the agenda, in addition to the allowance for items listed on the agenda. At “special” meetings…   more ›
