Science Discovery Day at Ilan Ramon

The school hosts community science fair and open house.

There were exploding volcanoes, rockets, dinosaurs and dragons at Ilan Ramon Day School on Sunday. As part of its 18th anniversary celebration, the school hosted a community day of fun and science, and children of all ages were given the opportunity to have hands-on experience with all manner of experiments.

"Science education and education today is an essential part of the learning that needs to go on,” said Yuri Hronsky, the director of the school. “We live in a world where we don't know what kind of careers we are preparing our children for. So giving our kids a chance to dig in and get themselves dirty, to try things out, is a really important aspect of what we do every day.”

Hronsky believes that the school is a member of the larger community and organizing events like this is part of their mission.

"This is science day and a way to kick off our science week, said Shelly Hiskey, president of the co-parent organization. “We are showing kids how they learn through doing, not just reading about it. It's a great way to show off what our school is all about."

One of the most enthusiastic participants was 12-year-old Miller Friedman, an alumni of the former Heschel West Day School. "I loved this school. Even though I no longer go here, I still feel like I'm part of it in way."
