Anatomy of an Agoura DUI Checkpoint
Patch attended a typical night for an LA County Sheriff's Department DUI checkpoint, held Friday night at the corner of Kanan Rd. and Thousand Oaks Blvd. on Friday night.
A DUI checkpoint was established on Friday night in Agoura Hills at the corner of Kanan Road and Thousand Oaks Boulevard.
The holds the checkpoint periodically, about once a month, according to Detective Richard Curry. They are not only about stopping drivers who are over the legal alcohol limit, he said.
“It’s designed to be very visible,” said Dave Huelsen, a traffic investigator working the checkpoint. “It’s as much about visibility and about enforcing than arresting drunk drivers.”

The sheriffs also check everyone's drivers licenses to make sure none are suspended.
Agoura Hills has been funded for 12 DUI checkpoints through the office of Traffic Safety, said Curry. The location was chosen based on the number of DUI arrests, traffic, as well as logistical and safety considerations, said Sergeant Philip Brooks.
